The Android platform is one of the most popular places for developers to demonstrate their skills. Besides official developers, anyone who wants to learn how to develop or port can try it. There is no better way to do that than with custom ROMs and restorations. In addition to being a custom recovery, OrangeFox Recovery is also an example of the success and popularity of custom development. OrangeFox Recovery for Android is available for download here.

The TWRP Recovery is another example of a custom recovery, and most of you are already aware of it. TWRP, which comes from a different team, is another good alternative to OrangeFox. FAQs

Can you tell me how to install OrangeFox?

Via a recovery

  • Installing an OrangeFox zip is as simple as flashing it with OrangeFox itself, or with any TWRP-compatible custom recovery, without wiping.
  • OrangeFox can also be used (a compatible recovery must already be installed).
  • If you want to upgrade (or downgrade) OrangeFox, follow the same steps (see below for more details).
  • There is no need to flash any DFE or anything like that when flashing an OrangeFox zip.
  • Below are detailed instructions on how to install OrangeFox via fastboot.

Instructions for flashing OrangeFox Recovery

Via fastboot, followed by recovery

  • A PC is required for this. If you do not have or have access to a PC, then you cannot complete the task.
  • Please note that these instructions are mostly for A-only devices:
  • Note 2 - Do NOT flash zip files using fastboot:
  • If your bootloader is not already unlocked, unlock it.
  • Your PC needs to be installed with adb, fastboot, and the relevant USB drivers from this page
  • To download OrangeFox to your PC and phone, download the correct zip file
  • From the OrangeFox zip file, extract recovery.img and place it in the adb directory of your PC
  • Boot your phone into bootloader mode
  • Your PC should have a command line window or terminal emulator open
  • Navigate to your PC's adb directory
  • For A-only devices, flash OrangeFox Recovery by running: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. Then reboot into OrangeFox by pressing the power + volume up keys until you see the OrangeFox splash screen.
  • The fastboot boot recovery.img file can be used to boot OrangeFox Recovery if your device is A/B or Virtual A/B (e.g., Poco F3 or Poco F4).
  • Once OrangeFox has booted up, ensure everything works, including mounting the data partition and working the touchscreen.
  • Select the OrangeFox zip on your phone, tap on it, and swipe to install it (because OrangeFox Recovery needs some files from the zip).
  • OrangeFox will automatically reboot the phone after installation
  • Enjoy!

How should I prepare my device before flashing/upgrading/changing my recovery?

  • Before flashing or upgrading a recovery, make sure to make full backups of your data partition and internal storage.
  • You must do this every time you want to flash or upgrade a recovery.
  • As a result, you will be able to protect yourself from potential problems.
  • You will be on your own if you do not make these backups, and something goes wrong with the installation.

Can you tell me if my phone is an A/B device?

Open a command prompt on your computer and run the following command:

Your phone will display the active slot (either "_a", or "_b") if it is an A/B device. If no output appears, then it is not an A/B device.

Can you tell me how to upgrade OrangeFox?

Do NOT skip the following step if you want to change your OrangeFox version; first, remove any OrangeFox password/PIN protection that you have set in OrangeFox itself.

Flash the new/replacement OrangeFox zip with OrangeFox in the same way as you would any other zip file

Does "fastboot boot ..." work for OrangeFox .img files?

You can do this if you have an A/B or Virtual A/B device.

Below are the specifications for A-only devices:

  • With some devices, you can "hotfoot" a recovery image without actually flashing it. This is done via "fastboot boot <recoveryimage.img>".
  • Xiaomi devices running old MIUI firmware (based on Android 6.x, 7.x, or 8.x) are typical devices that support this.
  • The new A-only Xiaomi devices also allow you to "hotboot" a recovery image (e.g. miatoll, vayu).
  • If your MIUI firmware is based on Android 9 or later, it may not be possible for some older Xiaomi A-only phones (such as violet, lavender). Because newer Xiaomi firmware updates in newer MIUI ROMs (based on Pie or later) will replace your bootloader with one that is incapable of "hot-booting" a recovery image this way.
  • In such a case, you can only flash the image with "fastboot flash..."
  • You should not ask about this in OrangeFox groups since it is not an OrangeFox issue.

How do I use OrangeFox's own password feature?

Definitely. Just don't forget your password/PIN. If you do, you will be on your own.

Is it really necessary to flash the OrangeFox zip?

Yes. Yes. YES. YES. You really MUST flash the OrangeFox zip.

Why would we release OrangeFox in zip format just for the sake of it, or just because we are ignorant?

In the event that you do not flash the zip, and you experience problems, you will be on your own.
