With The Past Within, our brand new exciting cooperative experience, we are beyond excited to share it with all of you.
Over 2.5 years of development led us to this point in the development of the game. This all started as a simple shoe box idea that turned into a unique co-op experience that - in our opinion - is as close as we've ever come to creating an actual escape room!
Having made it through all the hurdles, we are finally able to share this unique co-op experience with you. You may have already seen our devlogs where we explained the struggles we faced in creating this game: our first 3D project, switching from Flash to Unity, and creating our first co-op puzzle game!
It wouldn't have been possible without the incredible team behind this project. In order to produce The Past Within, we had to grow our small team to over 20 people who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Those people are all listed in our credits, so after you finish the game, please take a moment to thank them all. Our core development team Luuk Waarbroek & Martijn van Buul deserve special thanks for overcoming all the struggles we encountered. Our 3D artist Bart Wiltenburg and 2D artist Maarten Pelders masterfully transformed our distinctive 2D style into 3D. It was unsurprising to see the soundtrack of the game turn out to be yet another masterpiece under Victor Butzelaar's capable hands despite all the difficulties. The sound design from Jorick & Gilliam of Driftwood audio has elevated this project to new heights beyond anything we could have imagined.

I would like to thank all of you for your continued support! We haven't released anything new for quite some time, and The Past Within is definitely something new compared to everything we've done so far! A first-time experience in the Rusty Lake universe, both players will experience their environments in two different dimensions: 2D and 3D.

You and your partner of choice can each play The Past Within on your preferred platform: PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and (very soon) Nintendo Switch!
Replayability & Playtime
The game has two chapters and an average playtime of two hours. We recommend replaying the game from the other perspective for the full experience. Additionally, you can use our replayability feature to start over with new puzzle solutions.
Mysteries of Thrill
Your task in The Past Within is to unravel the mystery surrounding Albert Vanderboom. Seeing every nook and cranny will take a lot of concentration, which is why you'll need a second pair of eyes.
As a team, players must explore Vanderboom's mysterious residence, where nothing is as it seems. In order to make sense of whatever they find lying around, both players will have to communicate their findings.
It's a great idea: a co-op investigation game where communication is the key to solving problems. Unfortunately, The Past Within does not offer a way for players to communicate inside the game. Players should be able to communicate outside of the game, like Discord, if they hope to get the most out of the experience.
The Power of Perspective
Among the best things about The Past Within is that it lets players see the mystery from all angles. There is only one side to the mystery that can be seen by each player, so a number of replays are certainly necessary. While working together and seeing both sides of a coin sounds similar to A Way Out, things in The Past Within are a bit more complicated.
In this game, one player sees things in the past, while the other interacts with objects in the future. Players will have to be on the lookout for what's different each time they tackle a puzzle because events on one side can affect events on the other.
The presentation uses some 3D to spice up the typical 2D locations. Visually, it's nothing extraordinary, but it gets the job done.
